The Elements of Classical Drawing: The Human Figure

Jon deMartin Master Figure Drawing Video Demonstrations

Each demonstration is done in real time and generally within a 20-minute time frame, not unlike drawing the model in a life drawing class. I feel it’s important for the viewer to see the natural progression of a drawing unfold from start to finish without time lapse or dissolves to ‘speed up’ the process. Most demonstrations require multiple 20-minute segments according to the complexity of the drawing or how far I will take it to ‘finish’  After each segment, you take a break, and put into practice what you just watched.

My demonstrations are not to make finished drawings. My main focus is to do a well constructed drawing that is the essential foundation behind any drawing, whether a highly finished drawing or a quick study. My goal is to key on the essentials of drawing in both line and value to convey the third-dimension, which is primarily rooted in Renaissance, Baroque & 18th century drawing methods.

I try to explain what I’m looking for and what I’m trying to do while drawing so the viewer can ‘listen-in’ to the commentary, no different than when looking at a director's cut while viewing a movie. I feel it’s important to share my thinking process so that both of us can learn about our subject, and the fascinating challenges every subject presents.

The principles that I cover will help you in your own creative work and it’s my privilege to share this information with you. It's a fascinating journey. Good luck!
